Before attempting to apply satin ice fondant to your cake, crumb coat it by using a light layer of buttercream icing. Keep in mind, any type of imperfection is going to show up through the fondant, so this layer of icing will help to reduce this. It is a good idea to use white icing, unless you are planning on using a dark colored fondant.

Dust the Surface where You are Rolling the Fondant

Before you begin rolling your fondant, you need to dust the surface you plan on using. You can do this by putting powdered sugar in your dusting pouch. If you are in a humid climate, then you can use 50 percent powdered sugar and 50 percent cornstarch. For those in a dry climate, use a very thin layer of shortening on your work surface before you begin rolling the fondant.

Use a Rolling Pin Made of Silicone

If you are rolling out satin ice fondant, you should use a silicone rolling pin. This will help ensure you don’t have issues with the fondant sticking to the tool. Also, you should never flip the fondant over when you begin to roll. All you need to do is turn ¼ of a turn each time you roll so that it doesn’t stick to the surface.

If you use the tips here, you can have a successful experience using fondant for decorating your cake.
