Pain is an uncomfortable feeling that tells you something may be wrong in your body. Pain is good sign that tells your body that something is wrong and sends warning to your brain. Your spinal cord and nerves provide the pathway for messages to travel to and from your brain and the other parts of your body.
There are many different types of description and presentation for pain such as stretching pain, tightness, stiffness, disturbing pain, night pain, soreness, squeezing pain, aching pain, swelling, numbness, sharp pain, burning pain, tingling pain, weakness, clicking pain etc. Each person s threshold of pain is different. One person may rate the pain as severe pain, while another person may rate the pain as mild. This difference in rating of pain may also be due to a person previous experience and perception.
Musculoskeletal pain can develop in the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendon, soft tissues, fascia and bone. Any part of the body such as neck, back, shoulder, knee, hip, elbow, wrist, fingers, toes, foot can develop pain. This is normal part of aging process when person grow old as most people think. But pain can also causes by many different factors. Common causes of pain are injury, fall, sport injuries, accident, inappropriate shoe wear, overuse, repetitive strain, poor posture, and incorrect ergonomics.
Everybody will agree that we hate having pain. Pain can be very disturbing and hinder daily activities such as walking, eating, sleeping, hobbies, work, or whatever it is you want to do. We do not usually pay attention until pain stop us and we cannot continue the activity anymore. And probably that may be the only time we are going to be concerned about it. The pain is a sign that something is wrong, and it tells you that you have to do something about it.
Most people will find a doctor in Singapore for musculoskeletal pain. Those people who have previous experience in common neck and back pain, knows that most doctors will refer to a physiotherapist for treatment of pain. Physiotherapists will help through assess the condition and diagnose the problems before developing a treatment plan that takes their lifestyle, work and general health into account. Physical therapy may include manual therapy, exercise therapy, massage and the application of pain relief modalities such as Electrical stimulation, Ultrasound and TENS. Therefore they will provide you with any physical care which suits their personal needs. Throughout your treatment, therapist will constantly evaluate the progress and modify the treatment and rehabilitation exercise program whenever needed.
For more severe cases of pain, doctors will refer to an orthopaedic specialist or send for X-ray or MRI for further investigations. Most of the cases, conservative treatments such as physiotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractor, Chinese Tui na, osteopath, are tried out first. If it does not help, invasive methods such as minimal invasive surgery or operation are performed. After an operation, physiotherapy rehabilitation are continued to train individual to full functional recovery.
